The Start of a Magical Elopement
As an elopement photographer, I have been blessed to witness and capture many beautiful love stories, but Ali and Kaleb’s boat elopement on St. Mary’s Lake in Glacier National Park was truly special. You heard me… A wedding on a BOAT! From the moment I met them at a sweet little cabin in Columbia Falls, just north of town, I could sense the magic in the air.
I arrived just after 7 AM or so, after taking some story-setting shots on the way to the Airbnb. The road that leads north of Columbia Falls, Mt is so pretty and, of course, I needed shots of the National Forest signs, street signs, and roadside daisies for my narrative. Haha! When I arrived Allie the Stylist was working magic all over the bridal suit. I took time to capture both the bride and groom getting ready and all the sweet little detail shots.
As the morning rounded out we prepped the cars to head out. Ali and Kaleb had chosen not to see each other before the wedding, opting for a traditional and emotional moment when they first laid eyes on each other on the boat. I still can’t get over that…” on a boat” Ali and her maid of honor rode with me on the way there, and during the two-hour ride, we chatted, told stories, and formed a bond that made me feel like more than just their photographer.
The Elopement on the Boat
After a long ride and lots of laughs and tears finally, the moment arrived, and as Ali and Kaleb’s guests boarded the boat with them, we set sail towards the open waters of St. Mary’s Lake. The sight that greeted us was simply breathtaking. The lake’s sparkling blue waters, the crisp and cool air, and the majestic mountains in the distance created a picturesque backdrop for an unforgettable elopement. It was freaking wild!
As we cruised along the lake, Ali and Kaleb exchanged heartfelt vows, surrounded by their closest loved ones. We all watched in awe, tear-filled eyes, as the words of their vows lingered in the air. There was definitely something magical at work that day. They performed a beautiful braided cross ceremony, symbolizing their union and God’s place in it. It was a deeply emotional and intimate moment, one that will forever hold a special place in their hearts, and mine. It was a great example of how to incorporate your traditions and beliefs into an elopement day.
After the ceremony, we took advantage of the two-hour boat tour to capture stunning group portraits on the boat’s bow. The joy and love shared by Ali and Kaleb’s guests were evident in every frame. I could have stayed on that boat all day for the breeze and the view alone. Dreamy!
Intimate Adventure
But the day wasn’t just about the ceremony and the boat ride. Ali and Kaleb had worked with me ahead of time and planned a special time for just the two of them to explore Glacier National Park together. National Parks are kind of their “thing”, and being able to enjoy one of their favorite things on their wedding day really made for the coolest experience. This was their chance to savor the day without any distractions or stress from guests. For three hours, we ventured through the park, visiting iconic spots and uncovering hidden gems.
We laughed, we marveled at the beauty of nature, and we even took a moment to skip rocks on the river like carefree children. It was in these quiet moments that I saw the depth of Ali and Kaleb’s love, and I felt honored to be there to capture their joy on camera. I always encourage couples that choose to elope to take time out of their day to experience something meaningful, and this was the perfect way for Ali and Kaleb.
PRO TIP: Wedding days deserve intimacy even when the guest list is long. Set aside time in your day to share an intimate moment together without any distractions. This can look like eating dinner alone, saying private vows before the ceremony, or going for a walk before the reception. Just be intentional and authentic to yourself!
The Sweetest Reception
As the sun began to set, we made our way back to the cozy Airbnb. A sweet reception awaited them, thoughtfully put together by Events By Killian and other talented local vendors. The setting was intimate, and the atmosphere was filled with love and happiness. The bride and groom had their first dance there on the sunkissed deck and we all watched as we choaked away tears.
A delicious dinner of biscuits and gravy brought comfort and warmth, and a towering display of cinnamon rolls served as a delightful dessert. Rumor has it there was a gravy fountain! Guests shared stories and chatted over bloody marys and mimosas, the perfect pairing to the breakfast feast. The love that spread across the yard of the cabin was thick and sweet. I was so immersed I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to these two.
Prayers and speeches followed the joyful dancing and dinner turned to dessert much too fast for all of us. Kaleb and his mother shared a dance, and Ali shared one with her father. Of course, I cried so hard I had to tuck away behind the cabin to collect myself. There is just something so sweet and heartwarming to watch the parents savor these sweet lingering moments with their grown children.
An Elopement Forever in My Mind
Ali and Kaleb’s Glacier National Park Elopement on St. Mary’s Lake will forever be etched in my heart as a testament to the power of love and the beauty of intimate moments shared between two people. It was an honor to be their photographer and to witness the beginning of their new journey together.
As I look back on this incredible day, I’m reminded once again of the magic of love and the joy of capturing these moments for couples like Ali and Kaleb. Their elopement will serve as a timeless reminder that love knows no bounds and that the most meaningful memories are often found in the simplicity of intimate celebrations.
